Duke Energy Center

Duke Energy Center

The LEED Platinum Certified Duke Energy Center is a 48-story, 1.5 million square foot office building sitting above an eight-level, 1 million square foot underground parking garage.

Building of America Network recognizes the country’s most innovative, unique and challenging projects — projects that are particularly significant and/or that give back to their respective communities. While hundreds of projects are submitted, only the best are chosen as  award winners. The Duke Energy Center project in Charlotte, North Carolina was recently selected as an award winner. Building of America Network has recognized  SMC  as a Gold Medal Team Member.

Security Management Consulting was contracted to provide a state-of-the-art security design.  This was accomplished based upon a team approach working closely with Wells Fargo/Wachovia – Owner, tvsdesign – Architect,  and Childress Klein Properties – Building Manager.  A layered approach was applied beginning with glass barrier turnstiles limiting access to the elevator lobbies. These barrier type turnstiles, while architecturally attractive, prohibit entrance to the public while allowing easy access to authorized personnel possessing proper credentials.

This main lobby is under surveillance by security officers at the Main Visitor Desk as well as four Observation posts. The entire property is under video surveillance via a state-of-the-art IP Video System. In the core of the building is a hardened Security Operations Center manned 24/7/365. The Security Management designed Control Center is capable of controlling all elevators and systems throughout the building.

The loading dock is eight stories underground, and has an entrance one block away from the high rise. The entrance has a 24/7/365 manned security booth at the mouth of the tunnel. This entrance is blocked off to traffic via vehicle crash barriers controlled both locally and alternately from any one of three remote locations.

The state-of-the-art access control system is tightly integrated with the IP video management system, ensuring a safe environment for the employees and visitors of the Duke Energy Center.
